So this is my second post in so many days with geek in the title :) This book.......is one of the best things I've read this year! And it comes out today!
Elle has struggled with the loss of her father, suddenly plunged into a life with a wicked step-mother that insists on all things bleach blonde and tennis. As Elle strains through day to day working at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (all things vegan and pumpkin!), a random stranger starts to text her, insisting on getting out of an appearance at a con her father founded. But as they begin to bond over the show Starfield, will fate and history collide? Or can Elle find a way to compensate in a life filled with high fantasy and a harsh reality?
-If you are a fan of fandoms, a fan in a fandom, or just a fan of anything, Geekerella gives appreciative nods to all things geek culture. From Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel, DC, and random comics, Ashley Poston makes sure to name drop and costume flash as often as she can. Jokes abound when there's a great reference to be had, and Poston doesn't spare them.
-The range of characters in this book thrills me. They were down to earth, funny, and natural. It reminded me of people I knew in high school.
-Elle's romantic yearnings are relatable and crush worthy, not only because we know what's going on, but every girl and their mother wishes they had a secret admirer that said the things that a certain someone says.
-Darien Freeman's chapters are just as fun: with behind the scenes action, wrestling with fame, and struggling with impostor syndrome while acting in one of his most beloved shows. The pain was definitely real.
-Anyone who has been to a con, or generally knows what goes on, will feel right at home. I can't say how funny some scenes were without giving things away, but let's just say the author makes sure there's a Deadpool in there somewhere.
-If you aren't a fan of scifi or fantasy, I would still recommend this book for its rom-com value. The flirting is just sweet and subtle enough for anyone to enjoy, even if you don't like vegan pumpkin flavored items. Or glitter.
The author's website is pretty awesome too.
