Today, we are featuring the illustrious Jace Wayland. One of the snarkiest, bravest, brattiest heroes that we all love to think of as our best example of the perfect bad boy that's really good. Let's get started, shall we? (These are not in order by the way)
1. His Vanity
I mean, this boy knows he looks good, but he also doesn't put people down for it either. He actually goes for artsy fartsy badass, Clary Fairchild.
“No. That's Clary; she's my best friend." Simon pocketed his phone. "And she has a boyfriend. Like, really, really, really has a boyfriend. The nuclear bomb of boyfriends. Trust me on this one.”
“You're the first Shadowhunter I've ever met."
“That’s too bad,” said Jace, “since all the others you meet from now on will be a terrible letdown.”
2. His Sarcastic Wit
There's really too much of this to list. Let's just say he's too good with his words.
“Medium clever,” Simon acknowledged. “Like a cross between George Clooney in Ocean’s Eleven and those MythBusters guys, but, you know, better-looking.”
“I’m always so glad I have no idea what you’re vacantly chattering about,” said Jace. “It fills me with a sense of peace and well-being.”
3. His Inner Turmoil
Not only was he raised by someone who was pretty much the devil incarnate, he was raised to be a killer. The Lightwoods did a good job of helping Jace develop normally, but some of that darkness tended to creep in occasionally.
4. His Ethics
Jace always does what he thinks is the right thing, even if it goes against the Clave, or even his own family.
5. His Loyalty
“I don't care," Clary said. "He'd do it for me. Tell me he wouldn't. If I were missing-"
"He'd burn the whole world down till he could dig you out of the ashes. I know," Alec said.
6. His Undying Love for Clary
“I love you, and I will love you until I die, and if there’s a life after that, I’ll love you then.”
“And now I’m looking at you,” he said, “and you’re asking me if I still want you, as if I could stop loving you. As if I would want to give up the thing that makes me stronger than anything else ever has. I never dared give much of myself to anyone before – bits of myself to the Lightwoods, to Isabelle and Alec, but it took years to do it – but, Clary, since the first time I saw you, I have belonged to you completely. I still do. If you want me.”
7. His Cleverness
“He grinned. It was a wicked grin, the kind that made the blood in Clary's veins run a little faster.
"You want to go on a date?"
Caught off guard, she stammered. "A wh-what?"
"A date," Jace repeated. "Often 'a boring thing you have to memorize in history class,' but in this case, 'an offering of an evening of blisteringly white-hot romance with yours truly."
"Really?" Clary was not sure what to make of this. "Blisteringly white-hot?"
"It's me," said Jace. "Watching me play Scrabble is enough to make most women swoon. Imagine if I actually put in some effort.”
8. His Bravery
Sometimes more reckless than not, he always puts Shadowhunting first. It's his job, and a little bit of blood lust goes far in killing the underworld's worst demons.
9. He Doesn't Really Believe in Black and White (and it's the best)
His male Parabatai has a crush on him? Eh, still best friends. Downworlders might be right? Hmm lets take a listen to what they have to say.
“—kiss me?” Jace finished.
Alec looked as if he were about to fall off his chair. “WHAT? What? What?”
“Once what would do.” Jace did his best to look as if this were the sort of
suggestion one made all the time. “I think it might help.”
Alec looked at him with something like horror. “You don’t mean that.”
“Why wouldn’t I mean it?”
“Because you’re the straightest person I know. Possibly the straightest
person in the universe.”
“Exactly,” Jace said, and leaned forward, and kissed Alec on the mouth.
The kiss lasted approximately four seconds before Alec pulled forcefully
away, throwing his hands up as if to ward Jace off from coming at him again.
He looked as if he were about to throw up. “By the Angel,” he said. “Don’t
ever do that again.”
“Oh yeah?” Jace grinned, and almost meant it. “That bad?”
“Like kissing my brother,” said Alec, with a look of horror in his eyes.
“I thought you might feel that way.” Jace crossed his arms over his chest.
“Also, I’m hoping we can just gloss over all the irony in what you just said.”
“We can gloss over whatever you want to,” Alec said fervently. “Just don’t kiss me again.”
10. He's Willing to Sacrifice Himself
There are so many times he sacrificed himself to protect Clary, the Lightwoods, even Simon (need we mention a light vampire Shadowhunter snack?). Most of the time it came at a pretty big cost one way or another.
